Guest Post & Giveaway ~*~ Scorched Treachery by Rebecca L. Ethington

Top 10 Favorite Books and Why

1.  Angela’s Ashes – I found this book when I was in high school, I picked it up at a bookstore when on a church trip. I thought it looked good, but in some weird way, I saw my life mirrored in it. I have had a hard life growing up, and reading about another’s trials, and knowing that he made it through, and that I wasn’t alone was very big difference in my life.
2. Playing the Jack Before e-readers I frequented a library about twice a week. I devoured books and I got to the point that I was just pulling books off of the shelf in the hopes that they were good. That was how I found this book. And I love it. It has been out of print for about twenty years, but I really believe that it deserves to see the light of day again. It was my first foray into historical fiction and probably put the idea of writing back into my mind.
3. Sideways Stories from Wayside School – This book was my first introduction into chapter books in second grade, at least the first book that I remember. I guess it made that much of an impact on me that it erased the memory of all previous chapter books. I love the humor and the craziness. I think this was the first time that I realized that I could get lost in a book. That feeling is so addicting.
4. MacBeth I was in sixth grade and my school was putting on a Shakespearean festival, the play of choice was MacBeth – The Scottish Play – and I was determined to be cast as the lead. I memorized that monologue and climbed out a window to audition (I wasn’t allowed to audition) and snagged the lead. This may just seem like another bond with a show I had once performed; but it is so much more than that. This play was my first experience with Shakespeare. I think everyone remembers their first introduction to Shakespeare, be it good or bad. For me I remember how the words fell into my mind and stayed there, lingering to create worlds and images that I could only dream about. To me, Shakespeare was a magician.
5. Alice in Wonderland – When I was in third grade my teacher Ms. Flowers was in charge of the school play. And that year it was Alice in Wonderland. I was ecstatic. I devoured the book, twice, before auditions. Prepared a one line ‘monologue’ and was cast with the fifth graders as the Iris in the Flower garden. I read the book several times since then and when my first daughter was born I proudly named her Alice. I probably love Alice in Wonderland more for nostalgia sake. But I still love it.
7. Wizard of Oz – Everyone has a first book love, the book your parents read to you at night. This was mine.
8. Significance- Significance was my first introduction to indy publishing. My husband got me a Kindle for Christmas – he saved all year and so I was limited. If I remember the book was free or at .99 I bought it, and gobbled it up. I loved it, but what was more it put in the back of my head and when my sister dared me to publish Kiss of Fire, I knew what I was going to do.
9. The Sea of Tranquility – Not many recent reads are on this list – but this one definitely deserves to make it. It was so well written and well thought out. I think I read it twice, right in succession my desire to devour it was the high. I still recommend it to everyone.

10. I’m torn between something religious or a book that truly made my life better for number 10. I am not sure which one fits, so I will leave you with something I heard two nine year old discussing during a rehearsal in the late 90s. I’m not sure what book they were talking about but one small child said to the other “You should read it. That book changed my life.” I laughed at the time. But, even at ten books changed my life too.

Garret blinked, slowly, and she watched his chest rise and fall. “Did you know something about Kyle?”

She threw her boot at him. He caught it. She cursed.

“I knew he was a dirty cheating slime ball. Just like you.” Reagan tugged on her socks and her knee-high boot, tightening the lace in record speed. Standing, she marched to him and seized the other from his grasp, refusing to look at him. Her balance teetered as she tried to slip it on, but she wouldn't give him the satisfaction of seeing her helplessness. She braced one hand on the wall as she loosened the lace and lugged on the boot, refusing to sit. Refusing to reveal any kind of vulnerability or regret.

Garret remained in the doorway, watching. Unmoving. She pushed past him, his woodsy scent all the more reason to hate him, or at least hate the effect he had on her. She donned her jacket, slipped on her gloves, and tore out the front door.

“It’s too far to walk,” Garret called behind her.

“I’ll take my chances.”

Garret pulled on her arm and whipped her around. Eye level with his chest, she didn’t fail to notice the tension streaming out of every pore of his body. The cords in his neck bulged with each breath. His eyes, a deep, dark, abysmal dye, wouldn’t let her inside his head. Which was a good thing, now that she knew the psychosis of his mental state.

During my senior year in high school, I was dubbed most likely to write a novel because I always had my nose stuck in a book. I would hide my romance novels under my history book until my teacher called me out on it. Writing has been my dream ever since my mother read Brer Rabbit to my sister and me so often that we were able to recite it back to each other before actually learning to read. I love reading about the adventure of love, and getting involved in the legal field developed my love of suspense. I believe love is a mystery that most people have trouble resolving. While I don’t expect we’ll ever solve that mystery, I love to read and write about characters who work to solve their love’s mystery. See more about me at my website or tweet me @angelaswriter .

Excerpt ~*~

“Okay, let’s roll out.”

Out? Time to go, already?

The rest of the crew pushed away from the conference table and trooped out the door with excited murmurs. A far cry from the turmoil rolling through her.

“Let’s go, Malock.” Jager raised his eyebrows. “Or did you change your mind?”

She stood and released a deep breath. Even with her trepidation, she refused to back out now. Melina waited for her. “No, I’m looking forward to seeing Airondelle for myself.”

Brook spun away and rushed to catch up with her comrades. If she revealed her plans, she’d be stopped before she could find her lover. She would have to hide Melina right under their noses to bring her home. She pushed her shoulders back. I can do this. I have to.

The all-terrain vehicles sat loaded with equipment for the mission in front of the swirling mass of the portal. Her father certainly wasn’t wasting any time getting a team back to Airondelle. Crewmembers already filled the first vehicle, so she hopped into the back of the second.

Jager passed around everyone’s mission directives then shoved in on her left. Thank goodness he was the last to load. With his bulk, he occupied both of the remaining seats.

Before she had time to read her personal orders, they proceeded into the portal. She passed through the spinning matter, her body pulled and stretched in every direction. Unknown forces pushed on her chest, making it difficult to breathe. She gripped the seat, hoping she wouldn’t get pulled out. But the awkwardness didn’t last long. The transporter room light years away, clean, fresh air poured into her lungs. The alien vegetation of the foreign planet lined the rough dirt road they traveled. She yearned to explore the flora and fauna on a more intimate level. And she would, after setting up camp.

She opened the folder with her mission directive inside. Instead of the stack of papers detailing what Planet Core expected of her, she found a single sheet.

Her father’s handwriting scrawled across the page. You can never know the truth.

Hard, cold steel pressed against her temple. A gun. Her breath caught. What the fuck is going on? She grabbed her knapsack and launched out of the vehicle.

4 Star Review ~*~
Never Gonna Desert You is the second book on Jessica E. Subject's The Underground Series! You don't have to read the first book, Never Gonna Let You Go in order to enjoy this one.  Just be prepared that these are very quick reads at under 60 pages each.

Never Gonna Desert You is a fast paced sci~fi romance that gives you pause and makes you think about what life might be like on Earth someday. Brook has dealt with her father's controlling ways, the rules of this version of Earth, and a cheating boyfriend for far too long.  Now that she is making her own decisions, there is a lot that can do wrong ~ but so much more that can go right.  Brook bucks the system to be with Melina, but her happiness is not going to last long.

Jessica E. Subject manages to create a full story and Brook's character amazingly well in such a few amount of pages.  There is a well developed plot, that will continue with the series I'm sure ~ but she gives us satisfaction with the characters so it's not really a cliffhanger but there are unresolved issues. Brook was a great character with depth and someone I could empathize with, while Melina seemed to fall a little flat and I would have liked more depth to her character.

All in all, Never Gonna Desert You is a well written story with an interesting plot that will definitely make you want to read more of this series.

About the Author:

Jessica lives in Ontario, Canada with her husband and two energetic children. And she loves to hear from her readers.
