Excerpt & Giveaway ~*~ The Genesis Project by Tigris Eden

A huge thank you to Illustrious Illusions for having me on the blog today!
In my guest post I’m going to share an excerpt from the Genesis Project.

Excerpt:
Vaggo smiled down at the squirming infant in his arms. Genetics was a tricky thing, but he’d finally gotten it right. The infant was perfect in every way. It hadn’t mattered what the final outcome produced gender wise, as long as everything inside worked. What he’d gotten was a perfect little miracle, with ice-blue eyes surrounded by a golden circle, and a crown of silky black hair. Her skin a beautiful honey-almond, shimmered under the fluorescent lights. He’d yet to give the infant a name and didn’t know if he should.

A flawless face stared up at him in recognition. Beneath her skin he could see flecks of gold and blue veins, intertwined as they pulsed with life. An oddity he was sure, but out of her oddness was perfection.

He’d copied the genetic code from old text books that he’d gathered from the science section at the Hall of Records. The books pre-dated the first Uni-war. The pages had been unmarred by time and soiled fingers, still legible and clear. How she ended up looking unlike her kind was an anomaly. But she was growing at an accelerated rate and it concerned him. What if she died due to her rapidly aging body and he wasn’t able to harness her genetic material in time for proper research? What if she fell ill? Vaggo stared down at the restless baby and decided then and there that he wouldn’t allow for either of those possibilities to occur. She was his and he would keep her alive, always. The baby needed a name, and only one would do. Genesis.

Thanks again for having me on the blog today!

Old earth has been deemed unsuitable for life, New Earth is home. With the Uni-Wars over, races have joined together in order to sustain their way of life. All life was considered worth saving, but only one race failed to submit. Humans.

Now extinct, humans are a thing of the past. The people of New Earth won’t acknowledge their hand in their eradication, but they have benefited from it. Dr. Vaggo Blackmore has found the answer, he’s restored his races way of life- sustenance through farming. The one thing that will give them back their long lives….. Blood, human blood.

Biologically engineered in a lab, Genesis Blackmore has always been different. Her father has told her it’s due to her enhancements, the Federated Council sees her as a genetic mutation; and her fellow peers see her as the shiny new toy. Gen has had better days.

Everyone on New Earth has milky white skin, platinum blonde hair, and electric blue eyes. It’s the norm. Genesis’ glossy, black hair, ice blue eyes ringed by gold, would have almost made her socially acceptable- if it wasn’t for her golden skin and blue, gold veins. In a sea of milky white she alone is the dark anomaly.

All Pars get their life’s nourishment through blood plasma. All Pars find their match through the tasting. Gen can do neither, forbidden by her father to do so. She can neither taste, nor be tasted. Something that’s never bothered her until now.

Short Excerpt from Life in the Land
The distant hum of a tractor’s engine and a few notes of birdsong were the only noises, and once again Bobby’s chest filled with heart-clenching disappointment. His eyes prickled, and he tried to hold back the tears, but he couldn’t. Large, wet tracks raced down his cheeks, and he leaned forward and rested his head and arms on his knees as he sobbed, pent-up disappointment and salty worries splashing into the soil. “Please don’t cry, Bobby.”

Mike’s eyes were large and imploring, and Bobby was so miserable at his lack of progress that he just wanted something to hold on to. He leaned forward and tentatively brushed his lips to Mike’s in the gentlest of kisses. With a soft sigh, Mike kissed back in the same chaste way. There was a tremor beneath him, a mild shake that made his whole body vibrate. They sprang apart, both staring wide-eyed at the dirt as they tried to work out what could be causing the disturbance.

Bobby’s jaw dropped. Before his eyes two of the large roots pulled themselves free of the ground, clods of soil falling from the delicate rootlets as they reached out to him.

With an undignified yelp, Bobby fell backward and scrambled away, but a soft rumble from the oak made him stop. It was reassurance, a call for calm, and he knew then everything was okay.

Excerpt ~*~

“Okay, let’s roll out.”

Out? Time to go, already?

The rest of the crew pushed away from the conference table and trooped out the door with excited murmurs. A far cry from the turmoil rolling through her.

“Let’s go, Malock.” Jager raised his eyebrows. “Or did you change your mind?”

She stood and released a deep breath. Even with her trepidation, she refused to back out now. Melina waited for her. “No, I’m looking forward to seeing Airondelle for myself.”

Brook spun away and rushed to catch up with her comrades. If she revealed her plans, she’d be stopped before she could find her lover. She would have to hide Melina right under their noses to bring her home. She pushed her shoulders back. I can do this. I have to.

The all-terrain vehicles sat loaded with equipment for the mission in front of the swirling mass of the portal. Her father certainly wasn’t wasting any time getting a team back to Airondelle. Crewmembers already filled the first vehicle, so she hopped into the back of the second.

Jager passed around everyone’s mission directives then shoved in on her left. Thank goodness he was the last to load. With his bulk, he occupied both of the remaining seats.

Before she had time to read her personal orders, they proceeded into the portal. She passed through the spinning matter, her body pulled and stretched in every direction. Unknown forces pushed on her chest, making it difficult to breathe. She gripped the seat, hoping she wouldn’t get pulled out. But the awkwardness didn’t last long. The transporter room light years away, clean, fresh air poured into her lungs. The alien vegetation of the foreign planet lined the rough dirt road they traveled. She yearned to explore the flora and fauna on a more intimate level. And she would, after setting up camp.

She opened the folder with her mission directive inside. Instead of the stack of papers detailing what Planet Core expected of her, she found a single sheet.

Her father’s handwriting scrawled across the page. You can never know the truth.

Hard, cold steel pressed against her temple. A gun. Her breath caught. What the fuck is going on? She grabbed her knapsack and launched out of the vehicle.

4 Star Review ~*~
Never Gonna Desert You is the second book on Jessica E. Subject's The Underground Series! You don't have to read the first book, Never Gonna Let You Go in order to enjoy this one.  Just be prepared that these are very quick reads at under 60 pages each.

Never Gonna Desert You is a fast paced sci~fi romance that gives you pause and makes you think about what life might be like on Earth someday. Brook has dealt with her father's controlling ways, the rules of this version of Earth, and a cheating boyfriend for far too long.  Now that she is making her own decisions, there is a lot that can do wrong ~ but so much more that can go right.  Brook bucks the system to be with Melina, but her happiness is not going to last long.

Jessica E. Subject manages to create a full story and Brook's character amazingly well in such a few amount of pages.  There is a well developed plot, that will continue with the series I'm sure ~ but she gives us satisfaction with the characters so it's not really a cliffhanger but there are unresolved issues. Brook was a great character with depth and someone I could empathize with, while Melina seemed to fall a little flat and I would have liked more depth to her character.

All in all, Never Gonna Desert You is a well written story with an interesting plot that will definitely make you want to read more of this series.
