Guest Post & Giveaway ~*~ Kain by Brie McGill

Kain: Shy Guys & Inverting the Bodice Ripper

It’s becoming less politically correct to refer to a certain style of romance novels as bodice rippers, but as a huge personal fan of corsets, handsome men, and corsets being ripped away in the heat of passion with a handsome man, I’ll admit it: I will greedily devour any and all the bodice-ripping I can get.

So what constitutes a bodice ripper? Traditionally, the bodice ripper, which gained popularity during the ‘70s, is a romance (often Gothic/historical) in which the heroine is taken--by force--in at least one scene of unrestrained passion with a rough and hunky man, who rips right through her bodice in the process of getting down to it.

When taking romance into the realm of erotic fantasy, I believe the spirit of the bodice ripper is alive and well. Being completely overpowered by unbridled masculine power--shifter books are insanely popular at the moment, and I think they are a permutation of this same archetype.

Anyway, this archetype--I love it. However, when I sat down to write Kain, I decided to take the bodice ripper trope and turn it on its head. In terms of physical power alone, Lukian, the hero, is absolutely that alpha male. But, the circumstances under which he developed his incredible physique are tragic--a supersoldier created by the government, he was used for many terrible things against his will.

Lukian managed to escape with his life--barely. His real problems are about figuring out how to pick up the pieces of his broken mind, the life he never had, and figure out how to learn to live again, to live on his own. While in a fist fight, he could give Jason Bourne a run for his money, but in reality, Lukian is too busy buying horrendous clothes from the thrift shop, stumbling over his words in the presence of beautiful women, and trying to figure out how to peel an orange, because while he was being exploited by the military, these are all things he never once had the chance to do.

Naoko is a feisty woman who caves to Lukian’s smoldering physique and delicate personality. She finally decides that if Lukian is way too socially inept to go ahead and make a move, she’ll snap him up and make the first move herself. Lukian never had the time or the space to contemplate what it means to be a man--a complete and developed human--because he had been created to be used as a brainwashed, disposeable pawn.

But Naoko will teach him, show him personally what it means to be a man. She teaches him while she pins him down, holds his hands above his head... and rips off her own corset like a savage she-beast. Naoko always takes the lead--and every time she takes the lead, an article of clothing rips.

While the passion in Kain is only playfully forced (Lukian’s inner quest is about learning that no one can overpower him physically, mentally, spiritually), it very much plays on the dynamic of taking and being taken, which is prevalent in all the original bodice rippers. It’s a fun twist on the trope, and it does invite the inner growth of Lukian growing more confident with himself and his sensuality by the end.

And unlike many of the red-hot action/romances that involve the lame death of a heroine at the beginning of the sequel to make room for the new book’s new girlfriend, Lukian, Naoko, and their heap of shredded corsets will be around for many installments in the series to come.

Blurb
Beaten to a pulp, drugged into a daze, and brainwashed into oblivion, human experiment Lukian Valentin gambles his life to evade another eviscerating afternoon with his trigger-happy superiors. Fifty stories of a maximum-security building and hundreds of trained special operatives can’t hold a candle to his will to escape. Beyond the laser bars of his holding cell, Lukian must surmount the even greater challenges of repairing the fragments of his broken mind, forgiving himself for his unwilling involvement with the Empire, and learning what it means to live on his own.

The sassy and commanding Naoko Nai wonders just what to do with the soft-spoken, socially awkward, and totally ripped guy she was assigned to train for employment. She knows nothing else about him, other than the fact he was granted asylum, is great with a knife, and his little white apron gives her distinctly unprofessional thoughts.

When the Empire comes to collect, Naoko unwittingly provides the perfect bait to reel Lukian back to headquarters for a fresh series of brain implants and repair.

To save the woman he loves, Lukian must summon the deadly powers implanted in him by the Empire—powers he fears he can’t control, powers he struggled to forgive himself for using, powers that may drive Naoko away forever—because no ordinary man has struck a blow against the Empire and lived to tell the tale. To save Naoko, Lukian must emerge victorious from the battle against himself.

Book Blast ~*~ The Vigilante by Jacqui Morrison

Blurb ~*~

It isn’t safe for men who work in the porn business in the city of Toronto.

When porn producer Sal Turbit is found dead in his apartment, no one seems to care. No one, that is, except Detective Lynette Wilton. Lynette has been a homicide detective for only three months, and has yet to earn her stripes.

Murder is murder no matter who the victim is—and Lynette is out to catch a killer.

Could the killer be Wanda Chambers, a mentally ill woman who hates the “scumbags” who prey on the vulnerable? Wanda’s beloved sister, Cathy, was one such woman. Cathy became a porn actress and then took her own life when her sleazy manager/boyfriend, Gil Lee, wouldn’t let her go.

Lynette’s sergeant doesn’t think it’s possible. Wanda has a debilitating illness. But Lynette believes that Wanda’s hatred and harsh childhood make her a prime suspect, and she proves it by catching Wanda in the act of attempting to shoot Lee.

Renowned defense lawyer Maxine Swayman takes on Wanda’s case; Maxine has a different view of the accused. She wants to help Wanda get the help that she needs, and it’s not going to happen in a prison cell.

As the trial proceeds, will Maxine prevail and save Wanda, or will Lynette be able to tie Wanda to Turbit’s murder as well?

"Morrison knows how to create suspense! She brings readers on a roller-coaster ride that leaves you breathless from start to finish!" —Trey Anthony, star and producer “Da Kink in Da Hair”

Excerpt ~*~

Chapter 1
“Hey,” Sal said, “come on in. You’re right on time. Good to meet ya.” He left the visitor in the living room of his shabby apartment in a grungy, low-rent building, and slipped into the kitchen. The metallic pop of a beer bottle opening echoed in the other room. Then another.

Six empty beer bottles, a heaping ashtray, and assorted marijuana paraphernalia were already strewn across his table. The grandfather clock struck four times. Sal stumbled back into the room. “I got you a beer.”

Glassy-eyed, Sal said, “I’ve got lots of great products for you to move today.” He showed the visitor the cover of a DVD. “This one is new. It’ll sell out. She’s a real sweet thing. Told me she was eighteen ’n had the ID to prove it. Likely just some little tramp from nowhere-ville. Came to the big, bad city for excitement––”

The metal felt cool as the visitor pulled out a gun.

“What the hell?” Sal screamed, just before the bullet penetrated his skull.

He fell onto the sofa, blood oozing out the back of his head. His face was contorted, almost angry looking. Certainly surprised.

The spent cartridge from the handgun ricocheted against a metal garbage can––reminiscent of the pop of a beer cap––and then landed on the carpet.

The murderer studied the victim’s splayed body, feeling a sense of elation and satisfaction. Out came a Swiss Army knife, and the killer wordlessly hacked off a section of Sal’s hair, stuffed it into a small plastic bag, and then threw it into a knapsack. The killer then picked up the half-spilled beer that Sal had been handing over when the shot was fired. Perfect. Grinning, the murderer chugged the beer, retrieved the spent cartridge, and smugly looked at Sal Turbit’s still body, now surrounded by pooling blood.

Still wearing leather gloves, the murderer put the beer bottle and hot metal bullet charge into a knapsack and fled, smiling, into the dense night.

Excerpt ~*~
Dylan pushed her arm against the wall and twisted the phone out of her hand again. This time he held it just inches from her face. “You’re not callin’ the police. And you’re not callin’ Alec. And you’re not callin’ Sam. And if you dare to put your fingers on this bloody phone one more time, I’m smashin’ it to smithereens.” His voice became a roar. “Are ya understandin’ me?”

Vicki sobbed and turned her head away from him.

“And there she goes again,” he said. “Did I not take the time and take the effort to explain to you in minute detail why it is that I can’t bear to hear a woman cry?”

“Yes,” she cried, the tears running down her face.

“Then tell me why, when you can clearly see that I’ve got me hands full with the little matter of a bloody corpse in the room, you decide this is the time you want to cry?”

“I don’t want to cry,” she sobbed, “but you’re being mean to me.”

“I’m bein’ mean to her, she says.” He relaxed his iron grip on her but continued to position her against the wall. “Vicki. Darlin’. I’m not upset with you. Yet. But I’m askin’ you to remain calm and listen. Okay? Do you think you can do that for me? That’s all I’m askin’.”

She heard something shuffling and as she stared into Dylan’s eyes, she realized he was standing perfectly still, waiting for her response. Her eyes tried to move past him, but his body was blocking her view. She heard the sound again and her eyes darted back to Dylan’s. “He’s not dead,” she said, her voice erupting from her in a hoarse whisper. “He’s moving!”

4 Star Review ~*~

This is the first book I've read by p.m.terrell but it won't be the last.  She sets up a great paranormal suspense with characters that just suck  you into the story.  p.m.terrell's descriptions and development really make you feel like you are right there in the thick of things with them.

Vicki is trying to become an ex-CIA agent with special abilities.  But they seem to need her for 'just one more thing'.  I wonder how long that will go on! LOL . . .The characters are all intriguing and none of them are what you would expect.  They are all a bit quirky and fun to love or hate depending on which way they rub you!

I definitely recommend Vicki's Key if you are looking for a book that will make you gasp and really feel like you have been transported into it.  If you are looking for a well paced story that is full of action and finger nail biting moments, pick it up and get started on a journey with p.m.terrell

Date Publsihed: 3/27/13

A New Adult erotic BDSM thriller. Set in Cleveland, Ohio and the Ukraine, DOMINO is the story of a young, shy college girl's sexual awakening through art and bondage. An American version of THE STORY OF O, with elements of classic international thrillers, DOMINO can appeal to the classic erotica reader as well as New Adult fans.

Plot Summary ~*~
21-year-old college student and aspiring journalist Nancy Delaney’s nose for news smells a hot story idea when it comes to international playboy and artist Peter Rostovich. But as she works to get her story, she soon becomes intimately entangled with the mysterious Rostovich, who finds her irresistible. He becomes Nancy’s ticket to sexual awakening, and she soon discovers she has an appetite for bondage, too.

And there’s far more to Rostovich than just his art — he’s involved in a strange, violent criminal underworld that kidnaps Nancy and spirits her halfway around the world, where she’s held prisoner and made to serve as private Dominant-for-hire somewhere in the former Soviet Union. Will the sexual powers Rostovich helped awaken in her be Nancy’s only hope for escape?

Excerpt ~*~

I paused at the door before entering the gallery. The storefront had a large window hung with white curtains and posters that proclaimed “OPENING TODAY: Peter Rostovich.” The posters had old-fashioned black block letters on a white background, and gave nothing away about the art that might be inside. Typical gallery protocol, of course. The point was to get you to go inside, and preferably to spend money on the art. Between the couple of press gigs I’d already done and hearing about the openings Hannah had covered over the years I knew the ropes, at least when it came to how they handled publicity. Actually understanding the art was a different story . . . .

But this exhibit’s sensual art---if you could call it that---held my attention. As the exhibit progressed, so did the bondage levels. By the middle of the exhibit---the gallery was one long series of adjoining rooms arranged in a straight line---the thread, neckties and yarn had progressed to things like leather straps, ropes, and plastic cable ties---along with a few full-on money shots of models’ genitalia. Nothing in-your-face or super-crazy, like what you’d see on the pages of Penthouse, but plenty of exposed cocks and well-trimmed lady parts. Still, it wasn’t the money shots that troubled me as much as the plastic cable ties.

Plastic cable ties? What did something like that really have to do with sex, anyway? It seemed like an odd choice. They evoked images of Home Depot, not the bedroom. The photos featuring them were especially strange given the sharp contrast, and it seemed the artist had made a special point to use them on the darker-skinned nudes to make them all the more prominent.  There was even a pile of them set out against a black velvet cloth on a whitewashed pedestal, alongside a hand-lettered sign that said “PLEASE TAKE ONE.”

I did, fingering it absently between my fingertips while I studied a black-and-white silver nitrate print of a model’s well-manicured hands superimposed on what I supposed was her naked thighs, her wrists tightly bound together with a set of thin white cable ties. The plastic straps left deep indentations in her skin, made all the more prominent by the photographer’s use of harsh lighting and stark composition. From a distance the photograph was more abstract, and reminded me almost of a Georgia O’Keefe print, but up close the sheer sensuality was unmistakable.

“Put it on,” said a raspy male voice just behind me. “Tie it tight. I can help you if you like.” Underneath the scratchy, breathy overtone the voice was a startlingly deep, with the slightest hint of an accent, but I couldn’t quite place what kind.

I spun around. Standing just to my left was a tall, slender man with an angular jaw and broad shoulders. He had a slight stubble of beard, along with reddish-brown hair and arresting gray eyes that reminded me of dry ice. He wore dark blue slacks and a lighter blue oxford shirt with the collar open, no tie. The clothes were simple, but I could tell from their cut and the quality of the fabric that they were very expensive. His shoes were sleek, black, and European looking with square toes, and he wore a silver Movado watch with multiple dials and matching silver cufflinks. Even his scent seemed luxurious---a hint of bay rum with undertones of sandalwood and jasmine.

“Here, let me,” he said, taking the cable tie from my hand. And then, even before I knew what was happening, with a few swift movements the cable tie was fastened tight around both my wrists, its slick, cold surface digging hard into my skin.

My press kit and purse crashed to the floor. The room began to spin, and dark clouds crept into my field of vision. Everything went blank.
